Part 1 - Barking in the car

The Problem:

If your dog is noisy in the car, you should first look at the reasons why. Two common reasons are :

1. The dog only goes in the car to go on walks so is therefore barking due to excitement
2. The dog can see things (such as birds, sheep or other cars) and is barking at these.

Possible Solutions:

In case of (1) you should start taking the dog out on trivial journeys such as to the shops. You should buy your goods and go home again. Keep up this activity and ignore the barking. DON'T take the dog out in the car to go on walks for a while. Another approach you can take is to stop the car when the dog barks. Once the dog is quiet again, resume your journey. This takes time and patience but does work if you are committed to it. Of course, you should only try this approach if it is safe to do so on the road.

In case of (2) you can try putting the dog in a covered crate so it cannot see distractions from the outside world.
