Has anyone got any comments on Cartrophen? Does it work, is it worth it or is it just a cash cow for vets?

Ruby's been showing signs of stiffness in her back legs and her front paws over the past few months or so - especially after she's had a good romp round the field. We noticed that she was finding it difficult to lift herself up off the floor and started to hobble after getting off her chair so we took her to the vets who said they thought it was arthritis and put her on a course of cartrophen injections (costing £200 for a 4 week course!). Our vets are advising us to continue with the cartrophen, one a month from now on for 4 months then another 4 week course one every week, but we spoke to a fellow dog owner last night, whose dog also has arthritis, and he was told by his friend who's a physiotherapist that cartrophen doesn't work and is just a nice little earner for the vets.

When Ted had his cruciate ligament operation, he was referred to a marvellous surgeon called Knowle Fitzpatrick who did his TPLO procedure. Knowle wasn't all that fussed about using cartrophen either so now we're really confused who's opinion to trust - our vet's, the surgeon's, the dog walker's physiotherapist!

At the moment, along with the cartrophen injections, we've been sending Ruby to hydrotherapy (@ £40 per hour) and have only been giving her lead walks and (touch wood) she seems to be hobbling less. So now, we're not sure if it's the lead walks and hydro mainly doing the trick or if the cartrophen is also helping. Tiz a very confusing and expensive game this dog ownership lark at times isn't it! Phfft! :058:

What do you guys think? Have any of your dogs suffered with arthritis and if so what would you recommend to help ease the discomfort?

hugs to you hun xxxx....

as you know...a year ago my harley had septic arthritis...basically..he was opened up to find most of his elbow...disintergrated..and basically has bone rubbing on bone...until the new cartlidge grew back..which it has, but will never be as good as his orginal..but he maintains being on a number of painkillers and anti inflam's,....due to the septic arhtritis..he can't have great long walks....so has serveral shorter walks...and sometimes has to be rested for a few days auntil mobility improves...the alternitive was an elbow replacement or a limb amputation..which i was not prepaired to put him through...touch wood hes doing ok....green lipped muscle and also fish oils have also helped harley loads...

now the backend of last year my blind dog..lost the use of his back legs...and i feared the worst...vets wanted to x-ray him...but felt he had been through so much last years, diganoised with blindness, a tumor removed from his mouth, then he had his bladder play up...and they discovered he had an enlarged prostate gland..which then he needed to be castrated...so i was not prepared to put him through more x-rays ect..to confirm what my vet thought he had and has got Hip Dysplasia...bascially he does cope..on metacam...but due to his sheer size..he is not a good candicate for surgery..at present we help him with vets pain relif as and when he needes it..he too can have catrophen...but he cna't if hes on metcam.....the two don't work well together..its one or the other..i've heard mixed reviews on catrophen... some dogs do really well and others don't have much if any improvemnt...

i alsom found hydrotherapy worked well for harley...and have recentley been advised by the vets barnbay may benefit from it too..as its low impact on the joints..they are supported in the water..whiclst being excersied in a controlled way not too cause them any further pain or stress on the joints...

not sure i've helped much..but can totally sympathis with you..as each and every day i live a very fine balacnce in allowing my dogs to be dogs..whithout having setbacks or being in pain due to joint problems...mine are older..one is 8 and a bit the other almost 8 in 4 months time...xxxxxxxxxx

metcam works for mine..but their are a couple of other drugs that can be used with it..that works on block pain through the brain..harley had it with his septic arthritis...the only down side is it makes them very sleepy !!!.....

big hugs to you and your doggies...

...mine are older..one is 8 and a bit the other almost 8 in 4 months time... Ruby & Ted will be 9 at the end of Feb!!! - there was a chart in our vets and I think it said they were about 62 in human years!..but they still look and act like teenagers with boundless energy!

Thanks for all that info Terri, the things our poorly pooches have to endure eh!...not to mention how freyed our nerves become! It's all a bloomin' minefield isn't it! I suppose at the end of the day we've just got to go with our gut instincts. xxx
