View Full Version : Max is sick and it's my fault
I gave him a bone Sat am - which obviously was too much for him. He was sleepy all day & then started being sick Sat evening. He perked up after he'd had a poo (sorry), but has still been sick a few times. We thought as he hadn't been sick now (Sun 9pm) for a few hours he was Ok - he'd even been sniffing his food bowl, but he's just been sick again (although its bile now).
I'm feeling really guilty & OH is making me feel even worse & says I should take him to the vets in the morning to have an anti-sickness injection.
What do you think? Is he being over-protective? How long do you normally leave it b4 going to the vets? Especially as we know what's caused it - ME

Awww honey don't beat yourself up.... My FIL gave Glen a huge bone when he was alot younger and we never thouht much about it until about an hour later we looked and it was gone. Thankfully he was not sick...well he didn't throw up but he definately had a poorly tummy. :034:
How about if Max is still ill tomorrow you give your vet a quick call and ask their advice. Im sure his tummy will settle down by itself though and he'll be fine again soon :10:

Holly always throws up after bones. Its the marrow. Of course it is possible that he had a bug anyway and it just happened at the same time as when you gave the bone. I would do what Theresa suggests and phone the vet tomorrow. As long as he is drinking ok.
He's drinking a little, but fast asleep now. He loves ice cubes but didn't know whether its the right thing to give when he's got an upset tum?
I might leave him a biscuit incase he's ravenous later - I thought I'd read somewhere that starving them for 24 hours isn't necessarily the best option ?
Times like this I fell like a useless mum
Tis a good job I've never had children ;)
Washing machine has been on the go all day with his beds

Aww poor Max! Don't blame yourself tho Max, at least now you know not to give him bones again, although I bet he'd still eat them  Do you think perhaps he's bringing up bile now because his tummy is empty? Hope he's feeling better soon :10:

He's never having a bone again ;)
Yes that's what somebody else said & suggested a biccy.

It's easily done when you are getting used to BARF. I have done it with Fern too when I was getting used to what she could or could not tolerate. It was beef spine that did it for her too if I remember correctly :11: .
An animal spine bone as you fed (I saw the pic somewhere else ;) looked like beef?) is more dense than the chicken wing bones and is harder to digest. As a result they can bring back up some undigsted bits and it can also make them constipated. If you want to continue with it then I would only feed a small portion(3" or so) of it every other day and freeze the rest.
My vet suggested a spoonful of olive oil in her food and gave her some Antepsin suspension and Lactulose to take. Excercise also helped as it stimulated her gut. She did have to pass the equivalent of a lump of concrete first though  She was fine in a day or two :) and I learnt not to give her too many hard bones. I tend to stick to chicken now with the occasional lamb rib or two every couple of weeks. She still has her chicken wings every day, but I cut it down to one and give her a few extra raw veggies if she is going to have less excercise to avoid it happening again.
Is Max only part or full BARF now? If he is not full BARF then he will find it harder to digest.
Do let us know how he gets on.
Thanks everyone :)
Normal service appears to have resumed.
He was OK thru the night - he had a biccy about 11.30pm & a lil bit more at 2.30am
He had a run this morning & was back to the normal routine of knowing when he's due his brekki
Although he usually gets a carrot when I leave him so this morning was frantically looking round for that :030:

Firstly because I hadn't got any :045: (normally I'd have got some over the w/end) and secondly because this morning was his 1st meal so just wanted to make sure he was OK with the chicken.

Ah! I thought you were thinking it would add to his problem, when in fact it would have probably eased it ;)
I hope he is back in full crunching mode now :D

Glad to hear the little one is better :) Loki has a cast iron stomach he will eat anything and everything and I think the only thing that made him really ill is when he ate a load of cardboard while I was at work
Yes back to normal thanks. Although I only fed him chicken yesterday morning & maybe it wasn't enough as he'll always come to find who fed him when he's finished - we reckon he just comes to say thanks :D although it's usually followed by a burp :060: but yesterday he came & sat infront of me & moaned :045:
He does get his treat ball & carrot within about 10 mins of that though so he was happy.
Flew round the agility courses last night - although moaned for dindins when we got home
Just like his mum - lives to eat ;)

Glad he is better now. When Holly was sick after her bone, it was the marrow that made her ill. Believe me, cleaning marrow (after it has spent 3 hours in a stomach), off the bedroom carpet at 2am is really noooooo fun :11:
