View Full Version : Some vibes for Monty & Flo please
Sandra

With so many sad tales and sick doggies around at the moment I am sorry to have to do this, but please could we have some healing vibes for Monty tomorrow as he is going in to be castrated.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png
It's not a decision I have taken lightly and I know that compared to a spay it is pretty straight forward surgery but I am worried sick for my boy. I trust my vet 100% and I know that Nicola will take good care of Monty, but it still won't stop me worrying.
Added to this I also have to take Flo, one of my guinea pigs, in as she is having teeth problems. She needs to have a light sedation so that Nicola can burr her teeth as she has some sharp bits rubbing on her tongue which are making it difficult for her to eat. She is such a little dot, but a real fighter, fingers crossed she makes it through the procedure.
To cap it all, David is still stuck in Poland for the foreseeable future and I just feel like I need a big hug at the moment.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png Sorry for the moans guys. Sandra xx

Awww Sandra, poor you :075: Monty will be fine and so will Flo I am sure but you have to worry or you wouldn't be a Mum would you? Big hugs from us up here on the frozen North East coast!! I am sure it wouldn't feel half as bad if your hubby were home either. Typical. I think you should bill Iceland for your pain and suffering!!
Our vet is called Nicola too.........

Thanks everyone, I knew I could count on VC folks for some support.:077:
Just back from dropping Monty and Flo off with Nicola - poor boy isn't going to know what's hit him!! He was SO pleased to see the vet nurse and just sat giving her kisses as she tried to check him over!:053: He happily trotted off to the kennel area, but I think he was totally unaware that I wasn't following along behind him!!
Managed to get a good feed into little Flo before we went, so hopefully that will keep her going until I can get her home later. She is such a fiesty little madam and certainly isn't giving the impression that it is time to call it a day yet. Piggies teeth are such a pain when they start having problems, unlike normal teeth they grow continuously so once a problem develops it tends to be ongoing.
I have just cooked some chicken and rice so that will be ready for Monty later, I also have plenty of eggs in so can do scrambled egg as well. Babygro is at the ready, just need to fill a few hours now!! Cleo my cat, and Monty's best buddy, is wandering around the house calling for him - it is heartbreaking to listen to her.:062: She keeps popping outside to see if he is in the garden, bless her she just doesn't get why he isn't chasing her around!
Thanks again for all the vibes and for just "being there" and also for your pm Terri - very much appreciated. Will update later, i have got to ring the vets after 1pm so will fill you all in this afternoon.

Just a quick update! Nicola has just called (mid-day) to say that Monty has come through his op and is fine.:046::078: She is so sweet, she knows how worried I was this morning. He is being a good boy, not creating and is having cuddles with the nurses.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.png He has internal dissolvable stitches and glue on the outside of his wound and she has put me some more Metacam by to bring home just in case I need it (I can use it for the piggies too).
Little Flo not such good news.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png She has made it through her procedure, but the news isn't good. Her teeth have got worse and whilst Nicola has trimmed them the chances are we will still run into more problems - it's just a case of keeping her comfortable and monitoring her and when the good days out number the bad we will have to help her to RB.:062:
They will be ready to collect around 3pm but I can't get them until nearer 5pm as I have school run/piano this afternoon. Will update again later this evening. Thanks for all the vibes, they helped!!http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.png:078:

Lol...I was checking in too!! Great news about Monty monster!! Here is hoping that his recovery is swift and comfortable. I have always asked for Metacam for my girls. I know they give painkillers at the vets but if it were a human they would get pain relief for a few days. Then again, I am a fusspot :076:
Sorry to hear about Flo but you know, these wee creatures have a habit of proving us all wrong. She may be around with her feistyness for a good long while yet.
Big hugs and little squidges for all of you xxx

Just a really quick update. Got Monty home about an hour ago and he hasn't stopped crying! He has been out in the garden and done two poos, one of which was absolutely disgusting but I'm guessing that has something to do with all the meds he's had today. He also did the longest wee in history.:076:
He came out with a buster collar on which he was not happy about, he kept bumping into things, howling and constantly pawing at it, and despite being obviously hungry he wouldn't even eat some chicken from my hand with it on. I have now taken the lamp shade off and popped a babygro on him and he has tucked into some chicken and rice and has had a drink of water. He just won't settle and is sitting in the middle of the floor crying.:062: Think it could be a long night! The babygro is going to have to stay on for the time being because when I took it off for him to go in the garden he was straight at the wound.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png
I have some metacam to give him tomorrow, but he can't have any more pain meds until the morning. I am keeping everything crossed that once he realises he is home to stay and the food has hit his tummy he will settle down for a snooze. I will try to post some pics later - assuming I remain sane!!!

aw i'm so sorry to hear that Sandra..
my barnaby was so good..and sooo sleepy when we got him...which was not a bad thing..could be due to being older..the same with all my girls they ahve been older when i had them spayed..other than grace who was almost two..when i had her done beginning of this year..
do keep your eye on him sandra..and make sure he can't get to the wound...if in doubt..put his lampshade back on while you can't supervise him..
hes bound to feel a bit sore and uncomfortable..as i said before every dog is different..some sail through and others it takes a few days..
same as barnaby he could'nt have the metacam until the following morning..but as some of you know at 4 am i was up as he was crying and in distress and could'nt sit due to swelling....and by 8am i was on the phone to my vets..and by 9.15am we were there having him looked at..due to internal bleeding and swelling..
it is heartbreaking seeing them like this..and not being able to talk and explain to them what has happened..
thats good hes has something to eat and drink..bless him ..
all off mine done huge wee's....when they got back home...but none of my poo'd for a couple of days...
that could be due to being stressed ..and the medication...
mega hugs to you sandra..i know what your going through...and my heart goes out to you...
also gentle hugs to monty from his auntie terri and other mum mazie..if i could take his pain for him i would..just so you can relax and not see your handsome boy in pain...
hopefully..after a little sleep and lots of tlc and cuddles..he'll be bouncing back in a few days time...
i'm here if you need me or want a chat or a cry...or any advise...

Evening all, just thought you would like to see what my mum has got me rigged up in - the indignity of it all!! Not only does she send me off to "visit" Nicola for the day, who promptly fiddles with and chops off my boy bits, but then mum puts me in this silly get up!!:074:
What do you think, will this look catch on?

I am feeling rather funny at the moment, no matter how hard I try I can't stop crying and everyone keeps telling me to "shush, it's alright you're home now" - doesn't help it hurts and I am feeling sorry for myself.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png
On the plus side I had some yummy grub for tea - chicken and rice, mum can keep that coming it was scrummy.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon12.png Mum says I have to thank all the folks on VC for their thoughts and best wishes, so thank you all very much (from Flo too) - off for a kip now. Lots of love Monty xx

Morning all from a rather weary Sandra and Monty!! Monty finally settled just after midnight and we managed to get a few hours sleep. Finally gave up and got up at 6am and we are now back to where we were last night.:|
Monty has had some more chicken and rice for breakfast and half a dozen of his usual kibble. I have also given him his Metacam dose and he's had a drink. Been out in the garden and he's done a wee and more disgusting poos - trouble is he has an upset tummy and is now trying to scoot which is obviously not going to help his wound!:076: Not sure whether it is the food that is upsetting him or all the meds yesterday? Will it be ok to re-introduce his usual food today?
When he is outside the whining/crying stops and he would happily charge around the garden having a good sniff around but as soon as we come in he won't settle and the noise starts again.:032: I gave him the Metacam about 45 mins ago so I am hoping it is going to kick in soon although whether it will last the day (he's only allowed one dose) remains to be seen!
Thanks again for all your support, will keep you updated as the day progresses. Sandra x

hi sandra..
yes he can have his normal food now..
i only give mine chicken the night after the op..as its light on their tummy after a GA..so normal food can resume today...
as i said in a previous posting..mine have taken a few days to go for a poo..as they have all been consipated..
did monty have an upset tummy before the op ?...it might just be worth phoning the vet and asking them about that one...
the scooting could be due to his upset tummy..but my barnbay done this..because he was uncomfortable..and sore from the wound..as he too had internal stiches..and this would pull inside...have you checked the wound ?..just to check for any oozing, or swelling..he could just be sensitive to pain, and may need somthing a bit stronger for a few days to make him comfortable, or some dogs can react to the internal stiches...so monitor the wound..
it could be due to the fact he can't have a good run round to get rid of his pent up energy...but he must not go mad..and must stick to the lead...until the wound starts to knit together..
i think if monty is really that uncomfortable..it will do no harm just putting your mind at rest and speaking to your vet..telling them about his upset tummy..and how he is not settling and hes crying..as i said he may need something slightley stronger pain relief just to make him more comfortable..
hope things improve...
the good thing is he is eating and drinking...
love and hugs speeding your way..
let me know how you get on please..

I have always given my girls their normal food the day after but they didn't have upset tummies. If it were me (and this is only my opinion, everyone is different), I would use boiled fish, little and often because it is so bland that if there is a war going on inside his tummy then fish allows him to eat but not aggravate it. I would then add rice and then gradually a few biscuits over days. Like I said though, that is just me and although my girls tolerate chicken, they always got the runs with it when they were suffering any gastric upset.
Hope he feels better soon Sandra. Big hugs to you both xxx

Hi all, thanks for updating the post Terri (and thank you for being on the end of the phone this morning too:078:)- what a morning!!
I have not been happy with the way Monty has been acting, if anything he has been getting worse as the morning has worn on. I rang the vets first thing and the reception lady tried to convince me it was just a reaction to the GA but my gut feeling was that he wasn’t right.
Anyway, long story short we ended up seeing Nicola which was great. She checked Monty over, he was still creating bless him, took his temp – he SCREAMED the place down!!!:062: – which was slightly high and then checked his wound. Poor chap has clipper burn on his scrotum so that is all red and sore; his wound is a bit pink. As his temp was higher than she was happy with she has given him some antibiotics (Clavaseptin) and said she would change the pain meds over to Tramadol a stronger pain killer. She also gave me some cream for his scrotum and some Pro-Kolin to calm his gut down. She took him out the back to give him the first pain killer by injection and she was going to give the first AB this way too – he would not co-operate. It took 3 attempts to get the pain killer into him and Meg, my daughter, could hear him screaming from the waiting room – he was 2 rooms away from her! First AB now given by mouth! Hopefully the Tramadol will knock him out – please!! We are now back home and he is still whining and generally very unhappy, keeping everything crossed the he zonks out shortly!
On the food front, he is to have nothing until this evening and then Nicola has suggested giving him a small amount of his usual Barking Heads food as his tummy is usually fine n that. He is obviously very uncomfortable and generally feeling sorry for himself, but I think he is being a bit of a "boy" too!! Fingers crossed the new meds will kick in shortly and hopefully I will have the usual bouncy Monty back before too long.:078:

Just a quick update before bed. No real improvement at all today, even with the stronger pain relief Monty is still obviously in a lot of discomfort and has cried continuously all day.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png On a positive note the runny tummy seems to have slowed a bit - but he hasn't eat a great deal today.
I now have the mother and father of all migraines so I have just taken Monty out for a walk round the garden and have popped him in his bed - I am off to try to get a few hours sleep.

aw Sandra..
just came on here to ask how your day and night went yesturday..
was not wanting to see your update...
i really hope monty starts to settle down..how many tramadol can monty have..
as barnaby could have 4 a day...( although i gave one intitally...i then gave another...which vet said try him on one first..if not then can give a 2nd one..so we did two in the morning and then two at night which did help barnbay a great deal...)
maybe because monty has the start of an infection and temprature, an upset tummy, clipper burn and in pain...its alot for a young dog..
good news his tummy is settled a little..thats something..but then if he has not eaten much..there'll be nothing to come out of him...
hope the wound is looking less pink this morning..and hopefully the antibiotics will be working their magic with the infection..bless his heart..
and hope monty's pain can be brought in control..
oh i get migraines too..not nice..and one less thing you can do without right now..
hope a few hours sleep have helped..and hope to hear monty has settled a bit over night..
my heart and thoughts go out to you..
and praying each day you will now start to see an improvement with monty..i can toally relate to your pain and heartache right now...keep strong sweetheart..
look forward to an update this morning..when you have time..will check back on here later...

Morning all on VC. Sorry my last post was a bit short and to the point, I could hardly see to type!!
Had a good few hours sleep and if Monty continued to cry I didn't hear him - took something to help with the migraine and it knocked me out!! Feel a bit better today although now have that awful foggy headed feeling.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png
Monty is a little quieter this morning (thank goodness) we at least now have a bit of quiet between the crying. He has been out for a wander round the garden and has performed which is good, poo still looks a bit like a cow pat but a better colour than yesterday!!http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon11.png Sorry for the info not what you want to read at breakfast time!
He is only on half a tramadol twice a day Terri so not a very big dose. The other problem I have is that they are powder filled capsules so a nightmare to break and distribute and administer. Yesterday I managed to pop the powder into the middle of some ham, same with his ABs and he took them quite happily - not this morning howeverhttp://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png. The little so and so just spits the whole thing back at me - I have tried hiding it in chicken, ham, sausage, peanut butter, manuka honey, you name it I've tried it. In the end I mixed the tramadol powder with a little water, sucked it up a syringe and shot it into his mouth - he was not impressed, the wretched stuff must taste awful, it also foamed up and he spent the next 15 minutes trying to spit it all out - not really sure quite how much he got.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.png He is now so hacked off with me that he is refusing to eat anything, even his normal breakfast. His AB is still sitting in the kitchen at the moment, I'm just giving him a break and will then try again, any suggestions how to get the meds into a very reluctant dog greatly appreciated.
His wound is looking no better or worse than yesterday, so at least no deterioration. His clipper burn looks pretty sore bless him, but I think the gel I have to put on helps (David was very jealous that Monty got to have his "bits" administered to in this way, but I hastily reminded him that he hasn't got any "bits" left and that soon wiped the smile off his face!!:025::Z).
Little Flo is being a good girl - she happily takes all her meds and syringe feeds!! Not really any change, we just need to manage her condition for as long as she can stay with us. She is such a funny little dot of a piggy, I am just keeping my fingers crossed that she has a little time left yet.:078::078:
Thanks again for your messages of support, fingers crossed we see some sign of improvement today. Sandra xx

aw bless your heart sandra..
and norty monty..not taking his meds !!!i'll be sending mazie round to sort him out....
i suppose because barnaby is a bigger dog( barnabys were 50mg and its printed on 1-2 tablets ,twice daily, he was given a box of 30..)..thats why he could have 4 tablet a day..and i did'nt have to open the plasic capusule..so just hid it in some ham and he woolfed it down..he never lost his need for food tho...he loves his food...
maybe a chunk of chicken split down the middle..put some of the tramodolin and close the chicken..in and quickly followed by another bit..so he does'nt get a chance to spit it out..and just swollows it..
or maybe because you are having a bit of a battle with him ..what about putting the meds in some food..and letting one of your daughters give it to him..quickly followed by another nice peice of ham, chicken,sausage...
if you can he really does need to get his meds down him..so he can one be comfortable...and two more importantly the antibiotics he must take..to stop the infection getting hold...
agree with you just giving him a break...and try again a bit later..
i'm sure in a few days things will hopefully improve..sounds like a little improvement..is hes not crying all the time..its just going to be a slower recovery for monty..but i promsie you he will start to improve...( although you proberly won't beleive me..)..he will...
the clipper burn will take a while..just keep rubbing that gel in to make monty comfortable..give him a gentle hug from all of us here...
glad to hear flo is holding ehr own for the time being..long may that continue for as long as possible...
really hope things improve each day now for you Sandra...big hugs from us all xxxxxxxxxxx
and hope your headache feels better..i hate the day after a migraine..they leave you feeling so heavy headed...easier saying than doing..try and relax alittle..and have a few mins just to yourself..with a nice cup of tea...
we are all here for you.take care...and thanks for the update..

Right AB now in and gone - fooled him with his treat ball, we had a bit of a game and managed to smuggle the AB in with a few bits of kibble, so one job done until tonight!http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.png I am also defrosting some tuna bread which is usually a huge favourite so that we can try hiding this meds in that, I will also try terri's suggestion of getting Rachael and Meg to have a try administering to his lordship!

Glad to hear you both got some sleep, and hope Monty continues to improve today - some 'live' yogurt should help his tum settle :044: :075:

Morning all, well I am almost frightened to say this but I think we might have turned the corner! Monty didn't cry quite so continuously yesterday and I evenutally managed to convince him to eat his Barking Heads, we also found that the trick to getting all his meds into him is primula cheese.http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.png
This morning I was greated by a rather too bouncy Monty, so I think he is feeling a little better at last!!http://vocalcafe.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.png He has been a good boy and taken all his meds (thank goodness), been out in the garden to have a wee (still waiting for the other) and barked his head off at our neighbours heading out for their dog walk - so hopefully things are looking up at last.
Another bit of good news is that I finally have David home - hence the lack of update last night as I was at Heathrow collecting him.:077: I am keeping everything crossed that we are going to finally start getting back to some sort of normality.
Thanks again for all your support over the last few days. Sandra xx
