Have spoken to the vet after getting really worried about her choking this morning. The vet wants to increase the tablets to 7 days but seemed to think that I was expecting too much too soon.....losing a dog recently will do that to you I fear....... Anyway, she is wanting me to phone on Saturday and let her know how she is and if she doesn't get better by early next week then she will take it further. She says as Kali is insured we can send her to the nearest place that does MRI scans, that being the best way of seeing what is going on. I do not mind admitting it that I am absolutely sick to my stomach at the thought of a nasal tumour. :062:

These dogs don't half worry us eh. Most things in life I am a bit blase about and don't really stress but the minute something is wrong with my dogs I hit panic button immediately....and I have not gone through the stress of losing any yet so you must be ten times as bad....do TRY not to over think this and stress yourself out hun and hopefully you will see an improvement in your darling girl very soon :075:

Thank you to everyone who wished Kali well. I am going to get her soon but have spoken to the vet. It is a sort of good new/bad news scenario. There was no evidence of a tumour that they could see. Her nose was flushed which produced some slime but not much and swabs have been taken and sent away. However, Nicola the vet said the investigation was very interesting and showed that contrary to what we thought (which was that she has a small hole in her palate), her soft palate is totally deformed. There is no symmetry to it. One side has a long flap of skin and the other side is not a small hole but a large one.

She thinks that food has got stuck down the hole and unlike normal, Kali hasn't been able to flush it out. It has stayed and rotted, hence the infection. The coughing has inflamed the flap of skin and made it bigger. She said that she also thinks that the flap sometimes flips back and doubles over and Kali's coughing is just her trying to flip it back.

She said that she doesn't know enough to know what (if anything) can be done. She is almost certain that the hole has to stay the way it is and any subsequent infections just dealt with. I asked if the flap of skin can be shortened to give Kali a bit of relief but she doesn't know. We are going to wait until the swab results come back and then refer her to either Glasgow or Edinburgh vet school for clinical examination.

The way I see it is if they can trim the flappy bit without too much risk then we will go ahead. If they can do the hole too that would be amazing but I am not holding out any hope. If they say the risk to Kali isn't worth it then we will just plod along with the 'fighting infection as and when it appears' plan. I didn't sleep at all last night because I nearly didn't send Kali for the op today. She had improved but something just niggled at me that we were missing something. It isn't the best news but it is better than what we were fearing.

So glad to hear there is no tumour Sheryl :075: hope they can do something to lessen the 'flappiness' of the palette and reduce the irritation to Kali.....what sort of timescale are the looking at to going to glasgow or ebdinburgh?

Big hugs to you all:075::075:

Thanks for the update MM, I think all of us have had you on our mind all day.

I'm so sorry that poor Kali isn't going to get an instant fix to her problems. you must be very frustrated. However, the fact that you now know exactly what you are up against means that you have something to focus on. It's always easier to fight a known enemy than one who remains a mystery.

Excellent news on the tumor front!

Oh Sheryl, you must be all over the place with this...lots of ups and downs and not really knowing what the future holds. I agree with Fiona though; and any input from either Glasgow or Edinburgh vet schools has to help, especially when your own vet isn't sure what can be done. You and Kali are both in my thoughts :053:

Well she had a strange night. Lots of crying and whining and squeaking which I am putting down to the anaesthetic. She seems ok this morning if not a little subdued. I suppose now it is just a case of recharging our batteries and getting ready for the next stage of the treatment.
