Met a fellow dog walker this morning on our early walk. Her little Schnauzer (sp?) was walking really slowly behind her which is quite unusual as she normally bounds up to play with my gang.
When we got closer, I asked if all was OK. I was really shocked to find out the little one had suddenly gone blind a week ago. She is only 7 years old and the vet has referred her to the same specialist I took Buffy to recently to find out what is going on. The owner is hoping that as it happened so suddenly it is something that can be cured.
I said what I thought was the right thing - that a blind dog can have a good life, but unfortunately in their case it may not be so. She doesn't have a garden, but lives beside an orchard so her little one keeps bumping into the trees and falling into ditches. Whilst she thinks she could get used to being blind in the house, in an orchard where things change all the time she just doesn't think it is a possibility and thinks that she may have to have her pts if she can't see again. It is sooooo sad and she is such a lovely little dog - it was horrible to see her so bewildered. My gang seemed to know and were really gentle with her (they usually all race around together) Even Poppy just gently sniffed noses with her and then left her alone (Poppy is a huge dog in a yorkie body and likes everyone to know that!!!)
Hope to see her again tomorrow and find out how she got on today.
