View Full Version : Herb scented paths & patios

We've fancy the idea of creating a scented patio with herbs nestling in between the patio slabs. :059: I've read that herbs like creeping thyme, camomile and corsican mint are good for such projects as they are tough enough to walk on. Has anyone got anything similar in their garden? I'm just wondering if in "theory" it's a nice idea but in "practice" it might turn out to be a nightmare?:029:

OOh - sounds nice - i however have gone for the moss and weed look - very fetching i feel!!!!! hahah that's what we had too until we decided to attack the patio and dig out all the weeds and stray grass etc., Initially we thought we'd just re-point in between the slabs but got half way through and realised hubby had made the wrong choice in his sand and cement mix and most of it was being trapsed back into the house :058: so yesterday afternoon we hoovered it all up and that's why we're mulling over this scented patio idea now!:044:

I haven't got round to it yet but I wanted to plant chamomile in my lawn. Apparently the idea comes from the Romans who planted it so that it would smell lovely when they walked on the grass. It is a certain type of chamomile though. I think it is a great idea!!:059:

You will need an alpine or low growing thyme. Pennyroyal is the best native mint. Make sure you get the right camomile- the lawn one not the German one. You could also try some alpine marjorams. Good luck.

Good luck. Oh wow thanks for those tips I'll keep an eye out for them when I next visit our local garden centre and see what they've got!:044:

Love to know how you got on. I love gardening. At the moment trying to create a sacred place near a bit of wall. I have alpines, those silver things and fairies. My place to be me.
My garden is huge, and I feel the need to section it off like rooms, but unsure or how to do this and with what.
Inspiration needed.

Hey Starlight, I haven't got round to doing anything yet 'cause as always projects take a long time in this house (we always seem to get side tracked by one thing or another:045:!). Hopefully we're taking a trip over to a big garden centre this weekend to see if we can find anything suitable! Will keep you posted.:044:

Hmmm, well I went over to one of our local garden centres yesterday but couldn't find any suitable low growing, sturdy herbs to plant or sow, so that's kind of scuppered things for the time being. Not being very green fingered I dunno what to do or where to look now...maybe it's the wrong season for these things?:073: Anyway I'll try and source them online and see what turns up.:044:

:066:Ah yes I remember that happening in my parents garden too, so I learnt from their mistake and just keep mine in a patio container now and that seems to do the trick! :044: Now, if the low growing corsican mint spreads with such enthusiasm it might be just what I need inbetween the cracks in the slabs. As long as I can keep it under control and not let it escape beyond the patio I'll be happy!
I've just fired orf an email to Alan Titchmarsh's show to see if he can offer any advice so if I hear anything back from him I'll let you all know. Who knows he might even include it as one of his "viewers questions" on his show!:059:
