is there an effective alternative? I really fancy growing dahlias but they are very prone to slug infestation and I obviously can't use slug pellets as recommended by the dahlia society

I heard ages ago that boiled rhubarb leaves kill just about anything. It does mention cherry slug so maybe all slugs can be killed. Worth a go. :044:

Boil about six cloves of garlic in water, allow to cool and water your plants with it, slugs can't stand it, i've done this and it does work. Also they can't survive caffine, ground coffee and broken tea bags around the plants are supposed to work.
Mine die a nasty death now, I scoop them up on a small garden spade and drop them in a carry bag filled with salt.

thanks, I'll give a couple of those ideas a try and see if they work before I invest in any new plants. We have massive slug problems here, my garden has dozens of them each night - and that's just around the front path with just one bush in the garden. Little blighters!

Gwen, we have slugs and snails, the slugs I've been moving over the last few days have been enormous, one almost looked like a snake, it was at least 8" long, that's why they die the death they do salty bag.

Ok on a similar note, anyone got any good ideas about how to stop them going in my rabbits hutch?! i have to go out before bed and scoop them out with a spade, theyre disgusting and slimy and really wish there was a way to stop them going in! They get flung with quite force into the bushes

This might help with the hutch - copper tape. They also have lots of other anti-slug stuff :044:
