Am putting this

http://www.roselocator.com/rose_locator/roses/old_climber/674_city_of_york.php

Alternated with this

http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/climbers/clematis/large-flowering/classid.891/

So the theory is that the long fence at the front will have the rose (which is a repeat flowering rambler) starting off the season with white....then the Jacmanii will kick in and I will have the white and purple and then the rose dies away and the Jacmanii keeps flowering to end the year with just purple. That way it should flower most of the year. Yes? Or no?

very nice
i love clematis but find roses hard work (green fly and cutting back)
I'm sure it wont be a problem for a country lass

I am not really a gardener but this fence needs covering!!

I am hoping that the rose, because it is a rambler of the old type, won't need too much work!

very pretty.. I have honeysuckle as well as I love the smell in the evenings and it flowers when my clematis has past.

Your rose will have to be attached to the fence, rambler of climber, they are not a vine type plant, the clematis will naturally vine itself to the fence, personally I would look for vine type plants that will screen the fence, with just a few roses in between. The honeysuckle, whisteria & sweet pea's are vines.

It is small square mesh so I will do what I did in the last house and thread the roses through I think. I like the idea of threading honeysuckle too.

Have you looked at Rosa rugosa? They form good hedging and are pretty hardy....
