Well after our week away we have come back and are doing more recycling
we used to do paper and garden waste (as we have bins provided for these by the council) but we didn't do glass / plastics / tins
Since coming back and organising the kitchen I have found two green safeway boxes and so have located a place outside the window (easy to reach thro the window if it's raining etc) and have one for glass and one for plastics.
My next project is to get a container for compost waste and for tins :072:
How much do you recycle and do you have a kerbside bin / container provided by the council etc for glass / tins / plastics?

Absolutely nothing!! :076:
Garden waste in brown wheelie
I do have a blue box for paper and tins - but got rejected kerbside 3 times for having paper that could be described as cardboard (from round beer bottles) so got p**sed off and dont do it now!
Really shoud get my butt in gear tho - cos i know how irresposible i am being!

I'm a bit like Nessie. I'm so frustrated with the restrictions and threats of legal action (one bloke down here has a criminal record for putting an envelope in a newspaper bag) that I simply don't do anything.
I do feel bad about it and often resolve to do better but have to admit that I'm crap at recycling.

I have the blue paper bin and brown garden rubish bin and normal rubish bin
so to do any of the others I have to take them down to the recycle place myself - mmm am hoping that it will last (think the glass will, can't get used to tins or plastics yet tho, but it's only day 2 :045: )

half the problem here is that we don't have any bins at all. All our rubbish goes into plastic sacks so to keep a different recycling sack for each kind of rubbish as well as a black sack for normal rubbish is a real pain in the bum. the rain gets into them and makes them heavy then they rip when you try to pick them up or the bottles smash and so on and on and on and on

When we lived in a flat we didn't, but here we have the green (cost me £36!) blue and brown, so we throw everything into them. OH takes his bottles to the bottle bank when he's at the supermarket and any cardboard to the recycling bin there too.
I don't think we are particularly green, it's just easier to put it all in the separate bins than try to cram it all into the one green one! :045:
I also shred up newspapers for the rats' cage, usually unread ones, so it's a bit of a false economy! :080:

We recycle everything now simply coz I don't want to have to buy a trailer to get the wheelie bins 0.75 mile down the track to the roadside for the council to collect them and to be honest, it's easier taking it all to the recycle center once a week myself :010:
However, after humping 42 refuse sacks of grass cuttings to the centre i'll be managing the waste better in future!! :080:

Please, that'd be great. I usually shred by hand, but shredded with a shredder is better.

I recycle most things now!
Where I live we have to!
The council replaced our wheelie bins with tiny ones so to 'make' us recycle!
We have still got the large brown bins for garden waste, green boxes for cans and glass, BIG red bag for plastic & cardboard and a green bag for paper!

You mad woman :045:
We told Stumpy to put the grass cuttings just over the other side of the fence to keep the weeds down :046:

I'm forever hiking stuff out of the bin that OH has chucked in there :045: We have a paper recycling wheelie bin that gets collected once a month, but cardboard, bottles, cans and plastic we take to the tip for recycling, so we're not too bad :044: and we compost :051:

We have a green wheelie bin for plastics (not all though :021:) tin, paper and cardboard and a black bin for things you cant recycle. These a provided by the council. The green bin is collected every other week and is normally full.
We take all our bottles to the recycling bins ourselves and i compost as well. I have been doing it for so long now that it isnt a big deal and is just normal. I have to say that by composting the amount of actual rubbish we throw away is really small. Our composter was bought through the council at a reduced cost. We could also have got a water butt through the same scheme, but we already had one.
I used to live in a borough that was one of the top in the country for its recycling initiatives and the rest of Hampshire seems to follow its lead now, which is good. It makes it far easier to do all these things when the councils actually help you.
Although i dont use it, Tesco in Newbury have a recycling machine, which gives you clubcard points for recycling. It is really clever and i think it is a really good incentive for people to recycle.

OMG - after reading some of your replies I am going to have to check what we can put in the blue bin (the paper one) as i have the cardboard in there fron around the beer bottles

We have a blue bin for paper and cardboard but as others say, only cardboard that is thin and no brown (like loo roll cardboard), we also have a black box for tins, plastic and glass. However, as we proved when Caroline was here.....sometimes it can't take all the bottles :076: We do try to recycle everything and luckily there are recycle sites in Fyvie and Turriff and also (I have just discovered) in Cuminestown behind the pub which is only 2.5 miles away.

Recycling is the only thing our council do well! It has been up and running for years now and we have:
Brown bin for cardboard and grass etc
Plastics, aerosols, paper, glass, tins, tetra paks all get collected
Everything else in grey bin which gets collected once a fortnight and is usually only 3/4 full now that we are so religious about recylcling. They also have a huge recycling operation at the landfill so that nearly everything is recycled. It is very rare I have had to put anything in the 'landfill' skips there!
I've held back from composting as nearly everyone I know has had rat problems when they have :(

Must say that Manchester Council are great with their reclycling too. Mum has a place for every single thing she throws away. Wish up here would take a leaf out of their book. I mean, what use is a small box for cans, bottles and plastic when you live in the hooloo.....

We have to, bottles cans & paper. I have a composter because I have six steps to the house and cant wheel out a bin full of grass, and now used cooking oil. In the village there is a large recycler for clothes and shoes.

Yay! Council have just told us that we will soon be getting a bin just for food waste too which will be collected weekly. At this rate we will be chucking almost nothing into landfill :)

That'll be good. When we were getting our brown garden bin I thought we'd be able to put peelings etc into it, but can't, a food waste bin would be great, but we'd end up just having a garden full of bins! :076:

We seem to have a good recycling here. We have a brown bin which is for garden waste and gets emptied every 2 weeks and then a green bin for paper, bottles and tins and a black bin for any other rubbish. They get emptied alternate weeks. We also have a great refuse tip that has bins for anything you can think of and usually the men down there are very helpful in helping you empty your car and putting things in the correct bins. :)

I recycle plastics, cardboard, and glass. I tend not to do paper and tins as I almost never have enough to make it worthwhile keeping around for months.
Old tv goes to a homeless hostel, old furniture goes to friends hehe

Our council collect garden waste one week and then plastic/tins/paper the next but we have to dispose glass bottles/jars ourselves at the local bottle banks, which I don't mind really as I find it quite theraputic! Our local recycling centre has just been re-vamped so that's given me a good excuse to have a good ole clear out as it seems to have a recycle bay for everything from clothing to cooking fat!:059:

Yes I have friends in Manchester, they have to recycle such a lot, not sure if its three wheely bins they have outside there house.
I have a box and should have a wheely but we can't get it down the steps and they will not collect from the rear of the property so that's why I have the composter.
