Petition re the Red Arrows Its not a joke please see the link and sign it

The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012
London Olympics because they are deemed 'too British'.
Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might
be 'offensive' to other countries taking part in the Games. The display
team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department
of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team 'too
militaristically British'. Red Arrows pilots were said to be
'outraged', as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games,
something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a
British-based event for being 'too British' is an insult - the Arrows
are a symbol of Britain .

The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas
trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world.

The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was
announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly
spectacular.

It is to be hoped that common sense prevails

If you disagree with this decision, sign the petition on the link

Well for myself I think it is 100% the correct decision not to allow the Red Arrows to perform :D

I think that the point is that the Red Arrows might be seen to represent an age of evil old British Imperialism which wouldn't send out the correct message :( . And as the Olympics are obviously multi cultural along with the majority of Britain we should embrace something else to identify our Britishness. Something that would symbolise all the wonderful variety of cultures that make up modern Britain. Time to forget the old ways and move boldly in to a new future :12:

I am sorry but I disagree. I have never seen the Red Arrows as anything other than an art form of flying. I have never watched them and thought of military strategies and conquering nations. Maybe we are multi cultural but the games are being held here so why shouldn't we roll out something British to mark the event? Does that mean if the olympics were to be held in another country they would be including knotted hankies and chips to make us feel included? I have no problem with race, colour or creed but that doesn't mean to say that I think we should have to hide all things British in case it isn't PC.

I think the Red Arrows should be allowed to fly, ok they might have a military background but they are essentially an aerobatic display team. As for being too British wtf  it is being held in Britain duh! here in Liverpool on St.Georges day we were informed that there might be a ban on flying the George Cross as it might be offensive to other cultures living in the city. Not much of a prob there for people as St Patricks day is celebrated more :D ok we are a multi cultural society, but do we have to sacrifice everything :( anyway I am off to sign the petition :D

Nah, thats balls. I'l willing to put money on the fact that none of the red arrow pilots give two shits about Imperialism. Nobody stops bag-pipes at royal visits in Scotland. Yet, those pipes are closely related to 'walking to battle' are they not?

This just seems like another act of over-sensitivity in a country which is going down the pan.

I don't think it really is a case of hiding all things British...... I think a lot of Britain's past history should be put in the past and left there for the good of the country's future. Instead of holding on to misguided traditions we should instead adapt to our multicultural society that we have so that more of population can identify with the country. And it may seem harsh but if over time let go of old traditions etc and bring in new ones....... surely that must be good in the long run.

Oh, christ....the red arrows....that's enough to bore folk to death! I agree that we should be embracing multiculturalism and the olymics are the perfect opportunity to do just that.

slylockfox1
9th October 2007, 11:17
ok this might seem crazy....... but think about it

If there is meant to be a display in the air........ how about hot air balloons for example. Each for could display on it something about all our new cultures and would appeal to the rest of the world.

Better than a foreign visitor looking at the jets and saying ........ whoooooooooooooooosh......... "oh they're gone now, that was those Brits just ramming their traditions down everyone's throats again"

Time to take a long hard look at our nation methinks :(

Michelle

Hot air balloons mmmmmmm..........ffs we are expecting more than just pensioners to these olympics arent we!

MightyMouth
9th October 2007, 11:23
But these guys are an aerobatic display team ffs! We are not parading two Spitfires and a Lancaster Bomber through the skies (and maybe a Chieftain tank or two) to show how British we are. As far as being multicultural goes, when these guys do a display, are you telling me that the only people that watch it are British? No other ethnic cultures go there and enjoy it for what it is? Nah.

Simon
9th October 2007, 11:24
There's no reason why we can't keep old traditions alongside new ones. But f*ck sake man.... hot air balloons - thats an airshow to slit your wrists to! To be honest though, it's not the 'type' of show that annoys me. It's the lame-ass excuse for why the red arrows shouldn't be used. They could be used together with some new stuff - and everyone would be happy. Ditching your heritage isn't the way forward though.

If this country had less over-sensitive whingers, I think THAT would put us further forward. We're kicking our own arses. Shit that annoys me like.... teachers can't hit kids anymore! Why the F not? And as a result, we're left with kids who think an ASBO is a trophey. If law were in my hands, i'd publicly hang the little b*stards and make the rest of them watch. Now THAT is a system of law! You watch the crime rate drop!

Actually, I've been thinking about the bag pipe thing. I had no idea it was associated with battles. perhaps we should rethink them too.

slylockfox1
9th October 2007, 11:47
look I think that the way some of you guys react in such a way about losing traditions in fact actually shows that times have to change. Let's move on from a country that used to enslave 1/4 of the world....... c'mon guys.... think about the better good

slylockfox1
9th October 2007, 11:50
FFS can you imagine the Red Arrows screaming overhead........... half of London's arab population will be running from cover thinking that they were about to be bombed :(

Simon
9th October 2007, 11:53
If I didn't honestly believe I lived in a country which is going to shit - i'd likely agree with you. But if todays society is a snapshot of what happens when we 'move on' - i'd be happy to be stuck in the 80s / 90s. I look around today, and am embarassed by what I see. 10 years ago, I didn't feel that way.

This is nuts. This is Britain and as much as it changes to accomodate other ethnic groups these ethnic groups have to also accomodate to our heritage and history. Sounds like the PC gang have gone crazy again. If they was to have their way we would all be sleeping in brown cardboard boxes. Maybe not brown cause that would offend someone. See through cardboard boxes.

Michelle

If not, then what do you think we should do to promote our "great multicultural society" SLF?

Nah, the Red Arrows don't represent the "Old Empire", they were founded in 1964, Winston Churchill started the shrink of the Empire as a concession to the Americans during the war. So, therefore they're not a symbol of the Empire at all.......although I do think that they're more of a Tradition and symbolic of British flying skill and Aero-nautics engineering.
This whole affair smacks of Political Correctness.......and it'll be stuff like this that people in England, Scotland or Wales of their traditional identities over time. Watch what happens if we stay in Europe, this sort of thing is just small-fry.

Canada is good m8, loving it......although I lost my job.......lol

However, Jo got a job in IT for a company as a Business Analyst. Anyway, shes on a better deal than I was so we're good. I can't get another job just yet because my permit is company-specific, but our Permanent Visas will come through in about 3 weeks and I can do what I like then.

Since I have nothing to do I spend my days trawling the Internet looking for Political Arguments to stick my big, ugly conk into.......usually with "foreign" (see: Johnny Foreigner) people.
Its the same old script, I use words like "***", "****", "*******" and terms like "welcome to democracy *******".

I like it. Jo just rolls her eyes.

Simon
9th October 2007, 15:45
Lol.... you still got the touch tho, dude! Still makes me laugh! Hey - i also still got a vid clip of you on my mobile, from one of 'those' parties at our old cottage. It's feckin funny!

So when can you get me a job over there, so I can leave this bloody place? :12:

PhilWill
9th October 2007, 18:43
I miss those parties at the Cottage, I had some really good times there. Talking of pictures I've got a picture of you somewhere when I took you to Dampkring, its a good picture.
To get here you'd have to put in for a Permanent Visa, then a little further down the line put in for a temporary Visa, have a few interviews over here, receive your temp visa and then you'll have your permanent visa fast-tracked before the temporary one expires. Easy as that really. Maybe we could get it done faster if we pretend that we're family, like you're a nephew or something....lol.

So why not stay here with the rest of them :05: and then you can object to the Red Arrows! The fact that people like Beth can't get a council property because we have to house other people first is another disgrace.....
Or come to Crewe AKA....Petite Poland where the road signs, adverts in the local press and the newspapers are all Polish.
I personally can't understand why anyone would want to live here my self and I would be on the first boat, plane out given the chance.
