when you cook a roast do you use fresh or frozen veggies?
we went to leannes today for sunday dinner. there were loads of us. all my lot all carols lot and some of leannes friends. now not sure about most families but i hate any veg that isn't fresh. except for sweetcorn and marrowfat peas. leannes friends were amazed that the only frozen thing used in the whole dinner was yorkshire puddings. even carol admitted to using mostly frozen veg and frozen roasties :11: i just cannot eat those things.
everyone has different veggies too so we had six different veg on the go not including spuds :o i love roast dinners but i couldn't eat them if they were made from frozen stuff. could you?

If my wife made the dinner and it was from frozen veg then yes i'd eat it coz she took the time out of her day to cook for me. However, when she does cook dinner it's all fresh apart from the yorkie duffs and she's a brill cook no matter what she turns her hand to, i'm only sorry she's not got more time.

Can't stand frozen veg for a roast all got to be fresh. However for quickness in the week i use those steam ones which aren't quite as bad. I bought a 3 tier steamer and it is fab.

In one of my previous jobs I had to learn to make gravy from the hot juices of roast meats direct from the roasting tin and it took me weeks before I was cut loose on real folks.......if I was caught using oxo i'd have been in deep poopookaka!!

If you grow your own or buy direct from the farm or from a local fruit and veg shop then fab but most frozen vegetables are frozen within hours of being picked and are fresher than the 'fresh' stuff on the shelves that's been trucked to a sorting place then to the retailer's distribution depot and then overnight to the store and then been sitting on the shelf.. this can take anything up to 3 days and guess what it is that keeps them looking 'fresh' all that time... I don't do roasts but I'm not bothered if the veg is frozen or not, as long as it's cooked properly!

I do understand about the freshness etc, and agree totally in principle.

But......with most veg you really can tell the difference and I hat the taste and texture. I can cope with frozen sweetcorn and peas. I always have them in, just in case, but all the rest is fresh, and we eat LOTS of veg. Usually 4-5 types at each main meal. usually steamed, but often sprayed with il and roasted in a hot oven. Yum!!!

Peas and sweetcorn are okay frozen, but everything else has to be fresh.

The worst offender of frozen veg has to be carrots, they're vile frozen i can't bear them. I do love most veg though so roasts take me ages. (Though i'm veggie so i'm not sure it's a real roast, but thats what i call it anyway)

It all has to be steamed too, i bought my mum a steamer last christmas (she asked for useful stuff, honest) and it's the most loved present i've ever got anyone!

The only frozen veg we ever eat is garden peas. Tried frozen roasties once cos they were on offer in Morrison's and never again - they were bloody awful. I make my own yorkshire as well - OH turns his nose up at aunt bessies!! Most frozen veg is watery.

Frozen carrots are evil things, I do keep frozen corn on the cob and peas in for pure quickness (and we eat loads of em) but otherwise a roats is done from scratch and I will often buy fress peas just for a proper dinner, I make my own yorkshires and roasties etc (although I have been substituting for mashed sweet potatoe) but I cant make my own gravy it turns out very wrong
