Hi there,
Was just reading up on some of the threads :)
Not much to tell about myself really. I live in edinburgh, having moved a couple of years ago from various places, including Ayrshire, Stockport, and South Glasgow. I have a hons degree in archaeology, and a HND in photography and digital imaging, and no job. I enjoy reading, collaborative writing, art and crafts, photography, movies, and some computer games.
Not much more to tell really. =^.^=

good luck in your search :047: I'm sure you will find one soon

Any idea on breed that you fancy - there are sooo many dogs out there that need a forever home

I had a black lab (whom I lost in Nov 08) he was a rescue and I have fern (she wasn't a rescue) working cocker and then I got Braan who was a rescue, another working cocker - I always had labs before these last two scoundrals

It would really be finding the right dog that suits my life. Ideally it would be a rough tri/merle rough collie, or a show cocker. Keeping my options open though. Regular trips to the edinburgh cat and dog home havnt found the right dog yet, and I am on a couple of rescue lists. Its just a waiting game now :)

*laughs* Im not too fond of most small dogs, cockers being one of the few exceptions because we had one when I was growing up. Small yappy dogs tend to get on my nerves :012:
Looking for a lower energy sort of dog since I live in a quiet apartment and cant really spend 3-4 hours a day walking it though I am in most of the time, 1.5-2 hours would be more managable especially if I can train it to do recall off the lead in the park.

Ever considered a rescue greyhound? There are thousands of them out there and they are one of the only recommend dogs for living in flats :044: Contrary to popular thought, they are the laziest dogs around, and love nothing better than to sleep on a sofa all day. They have the softest, gentlest nature, and are pretty quiet dogs. Most are quiet happy with a couple of 20mins walk a day :078:

ok, shameless 'pointy dog' promotion over :Z

I did consider them. However speaking to one of the people that run a greyhound rescue, it was made clear that it wasn't a good idea to let a greyhound off the lead at all (in fact I think they make you agree to never letting them off the lead anywhere except a high fenced garden because of this), because of their instincts to chase (and kill) small furry things: cats, rabbits, small dogs.

One of the things I really wanted to have again was a dog that I could let run around off the lead in the park when we went walks, without me worrying about whether it would bolt, or just find something else to do and not come back. Long leads arnt an option either, since they move so quickly that it could hurt both me and the dog if it took back but was caught with a long leash. I am sure there are probably some people that have greyhounds that can do recall well, but it would be a constant worry for me.

So I suppose I am looking for an older dog that is happy to potter about around me on a walk and not go too far, or a breed of dog that is placid and loyal like the rough collies. I am aware that I may end up having to get a pup and train it, but I would rather get a rescue.

Our grey, Frida is totally safe with my 3 cats and our little 'rat' dog, and there are plenty out there that are 'small furries' safe.....until a couple of months ago she had a very good recall and was safe to let of lead, but just recently we've had a few 'issues' with this :045:

Good luck in your search for a dog :044:

Siberian huskies have the same sort of trigger. You can bring them up with superior training, and they can be good for years and years, then something will just click in them and they are off like a shot. Its just something in their little doggy minds. If I didnt have experience with huskies in this respect, knowing breeders etc with many stories from other husky owners then I would be less concerned.
So what has been starting to go wrong with Frida's training lately if I might ask? Recall?

ooo FW Huskies :078: My neighbour used to have a pack of them - when i met her tho she only had 4 and then lost two through age and ill health, then one went wandering and I spent a good two weeks searching hills for her, then the last remaining one had to be PTS due to ill health and age (well they were 17 yrs old)

My neighbour has been great as since she has lost all her dogs (last feb), due to her health she hasn't got another dog but since I have gone back to work (last few weeks) she comes here and drinks my coffee and spends time with my dogs

wish I had known her when she used to race them

hope you find a dog soon that fits in with your life style :044:

The people I knew (lost touch with them when I moved from Ayrshire to Edinburgh) had 9 siberians last I was there! All their time was spent either walking them and planning/going to shows. It was their life. They had to take them out in groups of 3 for walks.. so walkies took way longer than anything i have ever seen before having to make 2-3 trips for each walk. By the time one lot was finished, another lot was getting feisty and needing to go out lol They were lovely dogs though.
