How come they bleed so much and frighten the life out of you.
Glen has just come back from a walk and stamped blood all round the house. On inspection he has taken a lump our of one of his pads. Its a back pad on a front paw and doesn't seem to be bothering him at all but Jesus did it bleed. Thankfully it has stopped now.
Is it ok for him to lick it and keep it clean himself or should we stop him...a bit of a difference of opinion in this house.
Which is it ???

Aww, poor Glen. :078: In therory him licking it clean should be okay. But just to make sure, I'd dab it with some warm salt water (one tspoon to a pint) on cotton wool and dry it off gently. Hope its better soon.

Ach he's bright as a button...they breed them hard up here...saying that I think the salt water may get a reaction :076:

Keep an eye on it a couple of times a day and if it starts to look like it may get infected get him to the vets :044:

1 tablespoon of salt to 1 pint warm water and stick his whole paw in a glass or jug of it and hold it there for as long as possible, this will draw out any infection, keep doing this.
Don't let him lick it, tape a sock onto it so he can't get at it as he can make it much worse.

Glad to help. Keep an eye on it for infection. You may need to get a boot for him to use for walks and try to keep of hard ground for a while - Molly did hers before Christmas and this week first time out on pavements :(

Phew thought it was something major then :010: Poor Glen and poor you for the worry :075:
Frida did this just before xmas and it's amazing how much blood comes out of a relatively small cut - luckily I spotted it before she got onto the linen sofa :074:
I make sure I have some 'vetwrap' in the house now as socks are a bugger to keep on...I got some from a saddlery but I assume the vets can sell you some as well.
Hope he's ok :078:

Errr no - if there was half as much blood as Molly had then there was LOADS!!! My mum had to mop our kitchen floor (luckily she was at my house when I came home) and believe it or not it was splashed all up the kick boards of my kitchen cupboards :074: so I know just what it is like!!!

Well we spent about 1/4 an hour this morning getting a sock onto Glen, we wrapped it in clingfilm and then coated the lot in parcel tape. Feeling rather pleased with ourselves we went back upstairs to finish getting dressed...less than 10 mins later Glen walks in minus one important part of his outfit...The sock was no longer on his foot and was instead dangling from his mouth :012::012:
Well we then popped into town and got a bandage that that sticks to itself...this has stayed in place so far :046::046::046:
He was really funny when he decided he was no longer able to walk due to the bandage but he soon realised it made no difference whatsoever and was running round like a loony again :D

Not affected one wee bit bar milking it a bit and holding his paw up and looking at us pitifully and glancing at the biscuit cupboard :045::045:

That's what we call it too :)
Be really careful with it, you will have to keep it covered for weeks as the new jellified skin has to blacken then harden then thicken so even when you think it is healed it is only safe on grass. One skid and the whole thing can come off :(
PM me if you want a wee chat and I'll give you a call later ; ) and we can compare bloodbaths :032:

Well we thankfully live in the country and my two rarely ever have to walk on paths so hopefully he'll be ok....I took the bandage off last night for bed and then put a fresh one on this morning before he went outside. I will keep this up for however long it takes :044:
