View Full Version : Doesn't like being groomed...

Poppy used to be fine about being groomed and since she was spayed last July, she needs a lot of grooming.
But lately she will only tolerate so much before she starts nipping and it seems that every time she's groomed, the nipping starts sooner.
I'm really thinking of getting a muzzle.

What do you think... :001:

No advice here I'm afraid, me thinks the little lady has learned that if she nips quicker it ends quicker :036: Iron gloves maybe?

Thomas is quite tolerant of being groomed, unless the clippers or the scissors come out and then he'll try to hide under the nearest thing he'll fit under! :070:

If it will get her out of the habit of nipping you then a muzzle may be the way to go....that or grit your teeth and ignore the pain so she learns nipping doesn't work.

If your pain threshold is anything like mine then a muzzle it will be :069:

She does the same when you pull sticky buds out of her coat, she gets that 'oh for god's sake woman, aren't you finished yet!' look on her face :055:

She's soo loving one minute :078:...then a grumpy old bugger the next :012:

I have to drug Barney to clip him - he hates it that much and becomes a danger to himself! Got to do it again this weekend and dreading it.....:014:

I used to have to get Kali in a Boston headlock to do any sort of grooming. She was a little git! I just used clicker/treats. I would do 2 brushes and treat. Then 3 brushes and treat. Ok, so it took me forever at the startand I would only do one quarter of her coat at a time but now Kali will stand and wait for the treat. :059:

She sounds quite like Jarvis. He has issues with his feet being touched after a traumatic vet visit, and so started nipping whilst being groomed, he then learnt that nipping made me stop, so he did it more. :057: It was getting soooo stressful for both of us, so i got him a muzzle, it means that i can trim his paws without any stress, and it is also breaking the habit for him. I am hoping that because he is learning that it's not stressful and that he is rewarded for standing still and not biting that eventually i can get rid of the muzzle.

Yup I'd go along with what the others have said....she has learnt that nipping puts an end to the grooming, so a muzzle to start with and in combination with treat training. Good Luck :044:

Thanks guys :044:

Think I'm off to buy a muzzle.
She's only like it when excess hair needs removing but thankfully she doesn't mind being brushed.

But right now she could give a woolly mammoth a run for his money ^^
