View Full Version : waiting to hear about a job - advice please

Right, I went for a job with a huge high steet bank recently. They have been really shit at contacting me from day 1 - often days and days after they said they would......which is a pain in the ass. The job looks fab....the boss looks fab.....but their communication is pish.
I had a meeting with the heed honcho (that whole informal, formal chat nonsense!) and she pretty much made a verbal contract by saying she wanted me in her team but that there was a formal process I'd have to go through as company policy - comp based interview and presentation. So, I had my CBI and presentation last Wed....and i feel it went really well. They said they'd be in touch by the end of the week and I told them I had a couple of other job applications pending (which I haven't).
It's now Wed of the following week and still not a bloody word from the swines. A friend who works in the same dept has told me not to worry - they did the same thing with her during the selection process. The thing is, i am really quite crap at waiting....for anything, and I hate this whole waiting for a call stuff.
So, to get to the point, I'm thinking of texting the boss and saying that I have had a verbal offer of another job.....I just need to know what the hell is happening! What would you do....get in touch (if so, say what) or just wait it out.
Sorry for the long rant and thanks in anticipation.

Oh Jools
you sound as patient as I am.....how good are you at poker?
It seems from what you have said that you got on really well with them, what i would do is phone her and just give it the "i don't want to put any pressure on you, but as you know i have been seeing other companies. One of them has contacted me today to offer me the position. I would obvioulsy prefer to work for someone like you but they have asked me to let them know tomorrow if i will be accepting it. Do you have any idea when you will be able to let me know about the position with yourselves"
Give her loads of flannel. I'm sure you can sweet talk her into telling you the score by appealing to her better nature.
I wouldn't text her as i think we have all seen recently how the written word can be read in the wrong way, I think you have a better chance of the outcome you want by talking to her. And as your friend said they do seem to take things at their own sweet pace.
I am sure you have got it but it is nice when you have something in writing. If its the bank I think it might be they are usually slow at stuff like this did you have to do the full online application to start with?

Alpha, thanks for your reply. I think talking to her would be a better idea.....however.....I am a really bad lier and know that I would make it quite clear that I was telling pork pies about the other job. Hmmmmm....will have to give it some thought.
I didn't do the full online application. It's a fairly senior mgt role (yawn)

If it is a senior management role you best learn to lie very quickly .
Its not really a lie is it....? can you not say something that isn't an outright lie then you can phone with a clear conscience

Wait it out!
Thats what I would do. Either that or be honest - ask them the progress of it, because you need to know where you stand.

If you don't have another offer what's the harm in waiting a bit longer. If you do lie it will get out at some point [maybe the xmas bash full of wine] and you may end up losing the job.......if it's a management position then you'll know about being patient.
Good luck!!

Thank you all for your advice. Despite the fact that I am sick of waiting, I have decided to stick it out.

Dear Whoever,
I wanted to thank you for your time last week (or whenever the interview was) and for the opportunity for the post of [Insert Job title]. I hope to hear for you in the near future.

I think you should tell them you are going on holiday (just in case they try to contact you) and did they have any news  Hope you get it if it is what you want :P
